The Range Riders Lodge

A timber landmark on the edge of the wild.

Built from native logs in the early days of Silver Gate, the Range Riders Lodge has stood watch over this mountain valley for generations. Hand-hewn beams, a working stone hearth, and walls that have heard a century of stories from outfitters, anglers, and the travelers who come for the park and stay for the quiet.

Whitebark Bar & Kitchen lives inside those walls. We kept what makes the lodge the lodge — the wood, the hearth, the wide windows onto the Absaroka peaks — and built a kitchen and bar worthy of the view. It’s the kind of room where boots are welcome and the last table empties slow.

Silver Gate sits at the literal threshold of Yellowstone — one of two communities at the Northeast Entrance, framed by Amphitheater Mountain and the Beartooth-Absaroka wilderness. After a day of wildlife, water, or trail, the lodge is where the valley gathers.

Our namesake

The whitebark pine — keystone of the Montana high country.

High on the wind-scoured ridges above Silver Gate grows Pinus albicaulis, the whitebark pine. It thrives where almost nothing else will: the cold, thin air at and above treeline. We took our name from it because everything up here depends on it.

The whitebark is a slow, stubborn survivor. It can live more than a thousand years, twisting itself into gnarled, weather-carved shapes against the alpine wind. Its fat, energy-rich seeds are a cornerstone of the mountain food web — Clark’s nutcrackers cache them by the thousands, red squirrels hoard them, and grizzly bears fatten on them before winter. Plant the tree and you feed the whole ridge.

It’s also a quiet engineer of the landscape. As one of the first trees to colonize harsh, high ground, the whitebark anchors soil, shades the snowpack so it melts slower, and steadies the streams that run down into the valleys below — including the waters of greater Yellowstone.

That role earns it the title of keystone species: pull it out and the whole high-elevation system frays. Today the whitebark faces hard pressure from blister rust, mountain pine beetles, and a warming climate, and across its range it’s now federally listed as threatened. Restoration crews across Montana and the Northern Rockies plant and protect it each season.

We carry the name as a small tribute — to a tree that asks for the hardest ground and gives back to everything around it. It felt right for a kitchen on the doorstep of the country it holds together.
